Web 2.0

Web 2.0 Reflection

This year in Web 2.0 I learned :
  • How to use Blogger
  • How to make a survey
  • Many different kinds of Wiki's
  • RSS Feeds
  • Social Bookmarking
Other than the quality of the computers, nothing in this class needs to be changed; it was useful and fun to be in. I will most likely continue using Diigo for social bookmarking to make my computers more organized.

Drones Go Mainstream

  • Today's drones are lighter, have better software, longer lasting batteries and vastly improved camera technology.
  • Law enforcement agencies and border patrol are using them to keep tabs on suspected scofflaws. 3D Robotics makes a $500 drone that flies itself via GPS, scouring fields for information on crop conditions including water levels, pest infestations and other signs of trouble.
  •  Currently, Anderson said farmers pay $1,000 an hour for aircraft flyovers.
  • There is also a growing market for smaller, simpler drones marketed to kids and adults for recreational use.
  • The Parrot AR Drone, has a range of about 160 feet, is controlled by a smart phone app, and can be bought at Toys R Us for $300. There have been up to $500,000 in sales so far.

Robo-Submarines Learn to Dive Free

  • T7000119-Robot_submarine_ALIVE-SPL.jpgRobot submarines are pretty good at finding their own way around but they still need a helpful human to guide them through twisting underwater ravines and channels.
  •  A new guidance system will let autonomous underwater vehicles snap photos along even the most treacherous reaches of sea floor.
  • AUVs can already navigate in open water by matching their depth to an existing terrain map.
  • The software tweak will allow underwater robots to autonomously take pictures of hazardous locations where only remote-controlled robots have gone before.
  •  The team ran a successful field test in Monterey Bay earlier this month and expects the system will be ready to be tried for real sometime next year.
